Meet Mr. Payne
Welcome to Central Middle School! I am honored to serve as your principal and start another inspiring year as a proud Charger. The 2026–2027 school year marks my ninth as the principal of Central Middle School, my 28th year with BCSC, and my 38th year in education. I first fell in love with middle school education while serving as Central's assistant principal from 2009 to 2014, and I’ve been a Charger for life ever since.
Central is a vibrant, extraordinary school, and I am committed to working alongside our entire community to make this year our best one yet. My top priority is building strong, meaningful relationships with our students, staff, and families. My wife of 32 years, Michelle, and I chose Columbus to raise our family because of this wonderful community and its exceptional schools. All three of our sons attended Central Middle School and had incredible experiences here. Today, our twins are graduates of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Wabash College, and our youngest recently graduated from Hanover College. Outside of school, our family loves traveling and gathering around football—especially since all three of our boys played right here for Central, Columbus North, and at the college level!

Meet Ms. Taggart
Hello! My name is Kari Taggart, and I am the Assistant Principal at Central Middle School. I could not be more excited about serving the 2026-2027 Chargers and their families, along with the staff and community at CMS.
When I'm not at school, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. My son and daughter, 9 and 6, keep me on my toes and offer constant entertainment.
